The 6 things you are not doing which cause your marketing to fail...

Make a plan that sticks

You might have a content plan, you might even be using it, but almost no entrepreneurs have a comprehensive marketing plan and spend their days trying little things and then pulling back when they don't work.

Target like a Sniper

Most of my success as a marketer is based on my obsessive focus on customer targeting and developing deep, empathetic and emotive persona maps that make creating content that matters to your customer easy and repeatable.

Start with Emotion

Most people either make social posts that are similar to their competition  or they try and make a 'hard-hitting' TV ad and either way, its completely ignored.  In my training I teach entrepreneurs to create content based on Frustrations, Fears and Aspirations which is a blueprint for finding what matters to your audience.

Create offers that are a No-brainer

Forget your vanilla e-Book or your thinly veiled sales meeting that you call a 'masterclass'. To get leads from a intelligent and cynical market you need to create offers that people actually want.  This means being brave and giving away some of your best secrets for free

Become a Master of Community

The days of spraying out social posts and ads and filling your sales funnel are long gone.  To scale your business and grow in this economy you need to be collaborative, generous and highly targeted in seeking our the communities that attract your customer.

Create a Marketing Machine

Marketing has never been a 'set and forget' thing. Successful brands big and small know that marketing is an always on, always listening and always evolving part of your business that is just like a machine, it requires fuel, maintenance and tuning.

"Anyone can become the marketing manager they can't afford to hire"

In 2006, I ran a small IT company and knew absolutely zero about marketing and went on to become an award winning marketer who speaks at global marketing conferences.  I've met thousands for entrepreneurs and solo marketers who have zero budget, feel lost and don't know where to start  - so I decided to share how I did it in my first book - Marketing on a Shoestring.

This has now evolved into a Podcast and a set of Courses so that you can learn all of the strategies and tactics that I still use, without having to pay an agency tens of thousands of dollars to do it for you.

Creativity is to think more efficiently

I am a curious individual who is passionate about science, math, and technology. I am a habitual knowledge seeker who loves knowing how things work. In my spare time I like to bike and play video and board games.

Marketing on a Shoestring

How do you cram over 22 years of marketing learning, trial, error and wins into something highly useful that any entrepreneur can do?  When the global pandemic struck, this was the question that I posed to myself.  The result was a workshop, a book, a podcast and a bootcamp.

The Podcast

Watch or listen to me interviewing marketing and business leaders, entrepreneurs and sharing my own lessons all with a single minded premise - how can you execute world class marketing on a shoestring budget?

The Workshop

90 minutes that will change the way that you think about marketing.  You'll learn the reason's why most marketing fails, the strategy that turns everything around and the you'll get started on building a highly targeted customer persona map to allow complete focus in your marketing.

The Book

In 2020 I created the first version of Marketing on a Shoestring Workshop.  I had 200 people register and over 100 stayed on for a whole hour of questions afterwards - I realised that I had stumbled upon something important.  A framework that was easy to follow for any small business and one that didn't require thousands of dollars in the bank to get started.  That workshop turned into a Bootcamp and in 2025 I started writing the book.   It is now finished and will be available soon.

The Networking Event

The workshop gets you going - the Bootcamp is what turns entrepreneurs into their very own Marketing Manager.  8 weeks of guided training with live labs, challenges, an easy to use workbook and all of the material available to you forever so that you can come back again and again as you continue to build and tune your very own marketing machine.

ABOUT STU LEES

My Story

After building a successful career in IT that lead to my first small business in 2006, I nearly walked away from it all.  I was standing in a cold bathroom at 5am, razor in hand, wondering what the hell I was doing to myself.

By most measures it looked like my life was great — revenue was over 7 figures, the team was expanding, and we had clients who genuinely valued what we did. But underneath the surface, I was drowning. I was working sixty-hour weeks, cold-calling people I'd never meet, attending two networking groups who didn't know about each other, and doing the kind of random, disconnected marketing that kept us busy without ever moving the needle.

I burned out completely. Two weeks in bed. And when I finally got up, I made a decision: take marketing seriously, or sell up and walk away.

I chose to stay. I carved out every Friday morning to learn — reading every book I could find, doing courses, getting coaching, staying with it when it would have been easier to let it slide. Slowly, the business started to move differently. Better clients found us. Revenue grew. We won awards. And eventually we sold — on our terms, at a time of our choosing. I've been working in marketing ever since: scaling a San Francisco software startup to over a million dollars in recurring revenue with less than a thousand dollars a month in ad spend, leading a large-scale fundraising campaign for Oxfam, working with brands including the Canterbury Crusaders, and helping thousands of small business owners across New Zealand, Australia, and beyond find the system underneath their marketing instead of just the tactics on top of it.

I work 100% remotely between my little studio in Auckland and my newly custom-made camper van which I use to tour the country while I work.  I'm also an ultra-distance runner — which has taught me more about discipline, consistency, and what humans are actually capable of more than any self-help book ever did.

The two things turn out to be more connected than they look: in running and in marketing, the people who win aren't always the most talented. They're the ones who show up, every week, without fail, long after everyone else has stopped.

If you're a small business owner who's doing everything and not sure any of it is working — I've been exactly where you are. And I built a system to get out of it.

I call that system, The Shoestring Theory.

It's what I use when consulting to clients, its what I teach and its all explained in detail in my new book..
